Research and Interests: 

Roger Detels M.D., M.S., began his research career at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit in Taipei, Taiwan in 1966. Professor Detels has served as Chair of Epidemiology (1971-1980, 2001-present), as Dean of the School of Public Health (1980-1985), as president of the Society of Epidemiologic Research (1977-1978), and as president of the IEA from 1990-1993.

He was an editor for the first and second editions of the Oxford Textbook of Public Health, and was the senior editor for the third and fourth editions. Professor Detels began his research in HIV/AIDS in 1981. Since then he has published a total of 175 papers in the epidemiology, natural history, immunology, and biology of HIV-1 infection out of a total of over 300 research papers. He was the editor for a special edition of AIDS Education and Prevention entitled “HIV Surveillance, Prevention, Intervention and Treatment in Asia : Where We Are Today” (July 2004). He is the director of the UCLA/Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program, which has trained over 100 health professionals from Asia , Southeast Asia , South Asia , Eastern Europe , and Latin America . He is also the director of the UCLA/NIAIDS AIDS Epidemiology Training Program. Over 50 students who have received their Ph.D. under his guidance have subsequently become professors, directors of state health departments, directors of HIV/AIDS programs at the local, country and international levels, and/or leaders in various fields of epidemiology and public health. Professor Detels has received over $70 million in grant support. He is the director of the UCLA Center of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, which has published over 900 papers on various aspects of HIV/AIDS, and he has directed research projects in China , India , Vietnam , Cambodia , Thailand , Myanmar , Philippines , Indonesia , Laos , and Thailand.
